Walmart Stampede

From the New York Times: Wal-Mart Employee Trampled to Death

What in Wal-Mart could be worth standing in line for, let alone trampling someone to death over?

Because Barbie Dollz Pony Express is marked down from $49.95 to $29.95!!! Kill, maim, destrooooyyy!

This is probably only of interest to me, but the special Thanksgiving playlist for Halo this weekend has some great cultural commentary. For example, the 'Black Friday' gametype has no weapons, so the only way to take out your opponent is to beat them down. Someone at Bungie has a sense of humor.

I was reading the MSNBC article on this incident and I found their report a little peculiar (ok, I guess it's an Associated Press report). They give the details of the incident, who died, who's filing a lawsuit, etc. Then they end the article with this:

"Items on sale at the Valley Stream Wal-Mart included a Samsung 50-inch Plasma HDTV for $798, a Bissel Compact Upright Vacuum for $28, a Samsung 10.2 megapixel digital camera for $69 and DVDs such as "The Incredible Hulk" for $9."

Huh?? So at the end of an article lamenting the maddening consumerism of America, you present us with a list of prices of things that were on sale??? What is that for? "Ooooh, no wonder people were trampling each other, they wanted the Incredible Hulk for $9, now it makes sense!" Seriously, WTF?
