Rolling Stone: Pete Townsend Inspires Classic Rock Debate
It's a meaningless debate anyway, but my answer is no. Mostly I just agree with the guy who's annoyed that the Police are worshipped in America while nobody's even heard of the Jam.
Pitchfork: White Stripes Reveal Icky Thump Tracklist
You've got to admit, some of these titles are pretty good.

ReplyDeleteI really like 'Aliens vs. Predator 2:AVP2' as a title, it's just so damn ridiculously funny.
Reminds me of a contest I read about lately where they tried to come up with the worst title for a video game with the winner being: World War II:WWII
Because 'Classic Rock' is a title worth fighting over??
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's just a term invented by radio stations, not an actual genre or time period as far as I can tell. That said, Pete's kinda wrong about the Police being punk; they're from the same era but their sound is too controlled and their lyrics aren't confrontational enough to be punk. To me they are the definition of a new wave band. When people ask me to define new wave, and they've never really heard of Talking Heads or Elvis Costello, I say the Police, the Cars, and Blondie, and they know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteI still don't quite understand how so many people can put the Police up there with the Stones and the Who, though. They had about 5 or 6 really great songs that still sound pretty good today, but in the end it just seems like they didn't have anything important to say.
